Gov. Markell signs law (S.B. 111) to protect student athletes from concussions – sponsored by Sen. Hall-Long and Rep. Walker

Under the new law, athletes and their parents will get information on concussions when they sign sports consent forms. Coaches will be required to receive training on how to spot possible concussions. The new law also puts into state law the DIAA’s current rule requiring athletes, who have sustained a concussion or are believed to have sustained a concussion to receive a medical clearance before they can resume play. During the signing Rep. Walker stated “This is the type of legislation that will protect our young people and have an everlasting effect on our athletes’ wellbeing. This type of legislation I came to Dover to introduce and have passed and signed into law.”
Rep. Walker visits the Southern New Castle County Rotary Club

On Tuesday May 24th, Becky visited the Southern New Castle County Rotary Club for breakfast at the Ches-Del restaurant on route 13. She spoke to the group about her legislative goals and her dedication to being responsive to her constituents. Becky reviewed the redistricting that is currently underway and explained the proposed changes to her representative district. During the visit she discussed important legislation she sponsored that would prohibit sexual offenders from ever getting licensed in the health care area (HB 45).
Becky also reviewed some of the key initiatives during the most recent legislative session. Among those, she reviewed the civil union bill and the work that has been done on the fiscal year 2012 budget. Becky closed by encouraging club members to call her with any issues.
Rep. Walker pushing to restore Farmland Preservation Fund

PORT PENN – With hundreds of acres of fertile farmland facing the possibility of being developed into hundreds of homes along Port Penn Road, Middletown Rep. Rebecca Walker is pushing to have the state’s Aglands Preservation Fund replenished in this upcoming budget.
Due to Delaware’s budget crisis, the state cut funding to its farmland preservation fund from $5.5 million in fiscal 2009, to $2.5 million in fiscal 2010, and $5.5 million for fiscal 2011. The proposed fiscal 2012 budget calls for no funding for the farmland preservation fund. Rep. Walker recently met with Secretary of Agriculture Ed Kee, Secretary of Natural Resources and Environmental Control Collin O’Mara and Delaware Farm Bureau president Gary Warren at Mr. Warren’s 135-acre farm on Port Penn Road to discuss the issue.
Rep. Michael A. Barbieri, Rep. Rebecca D. Walker and Senate Majority Leader Sen. Patricia M. Blevins introduced six bills Tuesday, March 22nd to strengthen patient protections and improve oversight of the medical profession.
Rep. Walker, D-Middletown and a registered nurse, is sponsoring House Bill 45, which would prohibit anyone convicted of a felony sexual offense from receiving a license to practice registered nursing. It also would permanently revoke the license of any nurse convicted of a felony sexual offense. Licensed medical professionals who fail to report child abuse or neglect would face discipline.
“As a registered nurse, I know how closely nurses work with the sick and the infirmed” Rep. Walker said. “Nurses have always been trusted members of the healthcare team who advocate for their client's well-being. Nurses are on the frontline of patient care every day and will continue to protect those who need them the most.”
